More Kootenay Classics

Posted on August 30, 2025August 30, 2025

Just because the views and pictures are stunning, I wanted to post details from our hike to Hourglass Lake as well as from a day spent at Jumbo Pass (west of Panorama).

Up through a burn area

Hourglass Lake is just up from St. Mary’s Lake west of Kimberley. It takes about 1:15hrs to the parking lot, and the hike to the lake took about an hour. It’s not long but steep.

Beyond that, one can climb the rocky scree slope to the upper lake but for a multitude of reasons, we (Vicki and I, plus dog) only went half way up that slope.

There are two tent pads available and the location in the middle of the lake (at the narrowing of the “hourglass”) is stunning. Chasing sticks of course was a favorite (the dog just learned how to swim recently – now there is no stopping her!).

Water fun

Maybe next time I’ll bring my overnight gear! No wildlife, no people on our way up!

Tent site

There were still lots of berries to be found and the dog definitely did! It was quiet until we saw some people on our way down. A great, accessible adventure!

The second set of spectacular scenery pictures is from a day spent at Jumbo Pass.

From Jumbo Pass

This was part of a SAR event and (in contrast to my usual up and downhill hiking) we actually got flown to the top of the pass and dropped there.

View from the pass

Even though the search down the trail to the west trailhead took a while, the views made up for it.

Panorama

Getting picked up and taken back to Panorama – another treat to see the mountains from the other side.
